Commissioner Marvin Arrington, News Anchors Constance Jones, Aiyana Cristal and Maria Boynton and More Scheduled to Read to Students at on Mar. 2 and Mar. 17
ATLANTA, Ga. – In celebration of National Reading Month, two Atlanta Public Schools will host Reading Across The Curriculum, an annual event that mobilizes business, media and political leaders to read to students to emphasize the importance of literacy. The two-day event is a collaboration between school media specialists, civic organizations and community volunteers, and takes place on Mar. 2, Read Across America Day, at Continental Colony Elementary School and on Mar. 17 at Beecher Hills Elementary School.
This year’s featured guest readers include Fulton County Commissioner Marvin Arrington, Good Day Atlanta Anchor Constance Jones, V-103 Anchor Maria Boynton, CBS 46 Anchor and Reporter Aiyana Cristal, Actress Dawn Halfkenny and Kyle Dixon, a teen who overcame challenges of being a special needs student, authored a book and now inspires other children.
Also participating are readers from the U.S. Air Force, Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System, Morehouse College, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, WXIA-TV, HGTV, CNN, Turner, Steed Media Group, The Georgia Voice, ArtsATL, the South Central Georgia Chapter of The Drifters, Incorporated and the Tau Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
“Reading aloud to young children every day is the single most important strategy we can employ to prepare them for a bright future,” said Frances Murray, a retired Georgia educator and gifted children’s coach who created Reading Across The Curriculum four years ago. “We are grateful to every single person who participates in the event. Their efforts are expanding the minds and impacting the lives of these students.”
